FAQs
What about silk, that's a natural fabric too. right?
Yes it is. Unfortunately most satiny silk shirts out there today are polyester. If you find an actual yellow silk shirt on Amazon, No Plastics would like to hear about it so we can amend the list!
How about Rayon, is that natural or plastic?
Rayon is natural, in that it is derived from plant material, some form of cellulose. The oldest of all synthetic fabrics, rayon was first invented in France in the mid 1800s. Produced as an economical substitute for silk, it nonetheless had disastrous consequences on the environment because of the very toxic chemicals used in the extrusion of its fibers. Today this remains a concern, and any conscientious consumer would do well to know the makers policies about both sourcing their pulp sustainably as well as closed system methods of chemical use and disposal.
What is the most sustainable type of fabric?
That would be hemp, hands down. Cotton and Jute (made from bark) are close seconds. The minute Amazon finds a merchant that makes a yellow shirt out of hemp, it will be added to the No Plastics list.
Do fibers from synthetic, plastic clothing really slough off in the wash?
Absolutely they do. They are shed in the wash, average everyday wear and tear, and just by walking around. These plastic mico-particals wind up in uor waters, our soils and the very air we breathe.
